Abstract

The clinical diagnostic criteria for chronic pancreatitis(CP) in our country have been revised. The new criteria "Japanese Clinical Diagnostic Criteria for Chronic Pancreatitis 2009," which were proposed in cooperation by the Research Committee for the Intractable Pancreatic Diseases supported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, the Japan Pancreas Society and the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, show novel aspects such as classifying CP into two categories, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, incorporating clinical signs and drinking habit into the diagnostic items, establishing the importance of imaging tests, and defining early CP for the first time. At the public hearing held on May 9th, 2009, many significant opinions were provided by the committee members concerning the compilation of the previous criteria, commentators, and experts in the field of pancreatology. These comments are worth being recorded as important materials for understanding the grounds for the revision and for assessing in the near future whether the new criteria promote the original aims and give useful information for clinical practice.<br>
