Abstract

We measured the levels of antithrombin III (ATIII) and thrombin-ATIII complex (TAT) in patients with brainstem lacunar infarction (LI group) during the acute and chronic stages, and compared them with those of a supratentorial lacunar group (LS group), atherothrombotic group (TH group) and cardioembolic group (EM group). The EM group revealed the greatest decreases in ATIII during the acute and chronic stages, while the LI group had the same ATIII levels as the LS and TH groups during the acute stage. The TAT of the LI group was higher than that of the LS group and similar to those of the TH and EM groups, indicating that coagulation is more activated in LI than in LS and that LI is caused by larger vessel disease. It was found that TAT is more sensitive than ATIII to hypercoagulable states, and that a combination of the two is useful for evaluating coagulation in cerebral infarction.
