Description

A 17-year-old man presented with headache and nausea. CT imaging revealed thrombosis in the superior sagittal and right transverse sinuses, and in the internal jugular vein. MRV and CTV partially visualized these sinuses. Therefore we diagnosed the condition as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). Angiogram revealed the deficit of the same sinuses and vein and typical signs of venous congestion. Susceptibility-weighted MR imaging (SWI) showed increasing signals in cortical and medullary veins. During clinical follow up, CTV indicated recanalization of the sinuses and the jugular vein simultaneously with normalization of SWI signals. We could evaluate the condition of venous congestion using SWI in the process of gradual recovery and SWI was able to reflect the process of recanalization precisely. The SWI MR imaging appears to be a promising early diagnostic method in cerebral sinus thrombosis.
