Description

In recent years, the children who lived in foreign country show a tendency to increase in number. It is well known that the influence of a bilingual environment is a possible cause of retarded speech and language. However, we have as yet very little information as to diagnosis, evaluation and therapy for such handicapped children. The authors presented 3 cases of speech and hearing disorders who lived in early childhood of importance to speech and language acquisition in the foreign country. Their chief complaints were respectively mental retarded, hearing impaired and stuttering. This study was attempted to evaluate the relationship between the speech and hearing disorders and the experience of life in foreign country by a case study method. Clinical findings obtained from these cases were as follows: 1. It was considered that their attachment behavior has showed insufficient development from early childhood. 2. Before they went over to the foreign country, it was conjectured that they showed slightly delayed speech. 3. In the foreign country, they showed the maladjustment to the same age group. 4. They were almost not acquired the foreign tongue. 5. The living in foreign country had influence on upbringing environment, and that situation of environment was considered to be "so-called "masked maternal deprivation". 6. It was considered that their delayed native tongue was influenced on the problem of upbringing environment rather than on the bilingual environment. 7. They showed the symptom of elective mutism, and among them 2 cases showed the problem of eating habits. It was considered that both symptoms were related to experience of life in foreign country. 8. It was pointed out that possibility of suffering from such problems not only in the process of adaptation to foreign life but also readaptation to native country. 9. It was suggested that life in foreign country retarded the chance of detecting and treatment of speech and hearing disorders in its early stages.
