Description
A token economy was used with a 9-year-old boy with autism who, although there were discriminative stimuli for helping behavior in certain settings, did not help in some cases. When reinforcement contingencies were used in the token economy, his helping behavior generalized in his home and school. After the intervention. he helped not only in the room where he had been trained, but also other locations in his home and school. Effectiveness of control by consequences, such as the token economy, for establishing helping behavior in children with autism may be influenced by (a) effectiveness of the reinforcers and (b) specificity of the reinforcement contingencies. However, because these suggestions are based on only one child with autism, more study is needed in the future.
