Description

Braille reading speed was analyzed in 36 experienced readers of Braille who had reading speeds of 351 characters per minute or more. The participants either read with both hands or with just 1 hand (left or right). Of the participants, two were 2-handed readers with right-left differences in 1-hand reading of less than 20%; in the 18 (50%) who were right-handed readers, and the 16 (44%) who were left-handed readers, the right-left difference was greater than 20%. No significant difference was observed in reading speed with one hand in either the right-handed or left-handed readers. When 2-handed readers read with their right hand, they read significantly faster than 2-handed readers reading with their left hand; those who read with both hands read significantly faster than the right-handed readers, but no significant difference was found between the reading speed of those who read with 2 hands when using their left hand and those who read with only their left hand. The right-left difference in those who read only with their right hand was small, whereas individual differences were large among those who read with their left hand. The benefits of reading Braille with both hands were shown in those participants who had small right-left differences, regardless of which hand they were using to read Braille. The present results suggest the importance of teaching individuals with visual difficulties to increase the speed of reading with both hands from the beginning of their training, in order to help them acquire efficient skills for reading Braille.
