Abstract

The present study examined effects of Social Skills Training (SST) as career education for students with mental retardation or autism in a special school. Social skills were selected that would be necessary for the students after high school graduation, such as thanking, greeting, and requesting help. Students with mental retardation (n=19) or autism (n=10) participated in social skills training 5 times, once a week. The contents of the training included instruction, presentation of a model, role playing, feedback, and discussion. Before and after the 5 sessions, the students' social and vocational skills were rated. Compared to the pre-training scores, their scores in 9 of the categories increased significantly. Comparison of the scores for the two groups of students revealed that the students with mental retardation showed a larger effect. When giving Social Skills Training to students with autism, some guidance device may be necessary.
