Description

The objective of this study was to examine the factors which shape "demand behavior" in an autistic child who was poor in functional speech skills. The external environment and the mother's responses to the child's behavior to obtain his desired objects were set up as independent variables. The conditions were as follows: 1. Manipulating the external environment. A. The child's favorite objects were placed in view out of reach on a shelf. The mother stood beside the shelf and gave the child an object when he tried to reach at it. B. The setting was the same except a chair was placed in front of the shelf so the child could reach the objects. 11. Manipulating the mother's responses. C. The mother gave her child the desired object more instantly than in condition "A" if he looked at the shelf or came close to the shelf. D. The mother was sitting on a chair and reading some magazines and only gave the desired object when she was asked. It was suggested that the establishment of "demand behavior" in autistic children requires not only the motivation provided in condition "A" but also the experience provided in condition "C". The function of the mediator was discussed with regard of the shaping of "demand behavior".
