Abstract

The present review of the literature covers studies on obesity in children with mental retardation that are included in the data bases ZASSAKU and RES in the National Institute of Informatics, JMEDCINE in the Japan Science and Technology Corporation, and MEDLINE in the National Library of Medicine in the United States. 17 studies were found in Japan, and 20 in the U.S. Of the 17 studies done in Japan, 7 describe the prevalence of obesity among children with mental retardation in Japan. The accuracy of these estimates of the prevalence of obesity is unclear, however, because the methods of measuring obesity, and the number and age of the participants varied. Among the 20 studies from the U.S., 9 focus on the effectiveness of the behavioral weight-loss program conducted by Anthony F. Rotatori's group. An important issue is to verify whether this program could be effective if it were applied in Japan.
