Abstract

The polarographic behavior of bourlbonal (I), piperonal (II), cyclamen aldehyde (III), salicylaldehyde (IV) and protocatechualdehyde (V) have been inverstigated. The wave heights of all of these aldehydes, (I)(V), with the concentration of 1.00.1 mM were proportional to the concentration and their quantitative determination was possible. Vanillin, having the OH group in para-position and OR group in meta-position against the CHO group, showed no reducing wave at the concentration of 1 mM, 0.25 M NaBr, 0.04 M B. R. buffer, and 0.014 % gelatin. Although bourlbonal showed the disappearance of reducing wave under strong alkaline solution, isovanillin, having the OR group in para-position and OH group in meta-position against the CHO group, under the same condition of vanillin with pH 12.5, -E1/2= 1.73 V and Id =1.79, did not show the disappearance of the reducing wave. The mechanism of reduction of aldehydes other than (III) showed an approximate agreement with the report of Pasternak but the polarographic behaviors of cyclamen aldehyde were clearly different from the other aldehydes.
