Description

Reduced type glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide consisting of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, has two crystal species differing in solubility in water. The solubility (25°C) of α form was about 14.2% and that of β form about 4.6%. The two species showed differences in IR spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns and DTA curves, but had close agreement in elution curves by amino acid autoanalyzer, NMR spectra, mass spectra, laser-excited Raman spectra and spot test with nitroprusside reagent. No difference was seen between their stabilities. Examination by instrumental analyses in the main shows that GSH is polymorphous, whereby α and β crystals are at least dimorphous.
