Description

High concentration of free nitric acid or nitrate in solution can be conveniently determined by a differential spectrophotometric method by the use of an absorption peak at 302 mμ. The concentration of nitric acid or nitrate (C2) is obtained with the concentration of the reference (C1) and the absorbancy of sample solution Ar from the following equation :
C2 = C2+ (1/a)Ar (a=7.86)
It is recommended in an accurate analysis to use the value of a, corresponding to the concentration of the reference solution used, because the nominal band width of entrance light on each reference solution does not agree and results in minor variation of a.
As for the reference solution, an optimum concentration is recommended as high as possible, though the use of about 3N solution is a practical limit. Conformity to the Beer's law is found up to 0.5N solution (NO3- ca.30 mg/ml). A method of constant ratio dilution of an unknown solution is presented. The method is rapid and needs no standardization of the reference.
