A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of sulfur in decimilligram amounts of organic compounds has been proposed, which is simple and gives satisfactory results.<BR>A sample is burned in a flask filled with oxygen, and the sulfur dioxide formed is absorbed in a definite amount of aqueous solution of mercuric nitrate mixed with potassium bromide. An aliquot of the absorption solution is transfered into a brown separatory funnel, and is shaken with a buffer solution (pH 7), benzene and an ethanol solution of diphenylcarbazone. By this procedure, sulfite in the solution reacts with the mercuric reagent, and the excess of the latter forms the reddish-violet complex with diphenylcarbazone which is extracted into benzene. Sulfur in organic compounds can be thus determined by measuring the absorbancy of the benzene phase at the wavelength of 562 mμ, referring to the calibration curve prepared beforehand.
