Description
Since the natural sciences require universal validity, it is needless to say that the evaluation of the mental stress should also rely on the development of objective methodology. In this sense, it is considered as a matter of course that the recent studies in this field are internationally tending toward the brain-physiological methodology. For the purpose of objective evaluation of fatigue, a new concept of "the function of concentration maintenance (TAF)" was presented by the author in 1960 and on the basis of this concept the TAF test was devised. Whether the TAF test can grasp mental stress reasonably as well as objectively or not was observed by means of field trials in various kinds of work characterized with mental factors. The investigations resulted in the fact that the TAF reasonably varied in parallel with the qualitative differences of the work. To make clear the essential mechanism of the biological reaction with which the TAF corresponds, experimental studies with noise exposure, muscular work and cortical narcotics have been carried out in relation to the TAF and the autonomic nervous balance, and also in relation to the TAF and electroencephalograms, especially the alpha wave. From the results so far obtained, we have reached the conclusion that the changes in TAF represent the mental stress quantitatively and the CPT (Cold Pressure Test) swing degree in the autonomic nervous balance expresses the qualitative nature of the stress.
