The relation between CO2 concentration and gaseous diffusion coefficient in soil after irrigation was investigated using three different media such as sand, vermiculite and Kanuma soil.
Carbon dioxide concentration in each medium in the pot increased after irrigation. In sand, this concentration in the depth of 30cm became 7, 400ppm immediately after irrigation which was five times as high as that before irrigation, while in vermiculite and Kanuma soil, this slightly increased but no more than 2, 500ppm. Decrease in CO2 concentration in drying sand was slow and the sand still retained 3, 800ppm in the depth of 30cm which was three times as high as that in other media 4 days after irrigation.
Gaseous diffusion coefficient in each medium increased with a decrease in water content after irrigation. In sand, the coefficient was 0cm2s-1 immediately after irrigation and still retained 0.035cm2 s-1 4 days after irrigation. In vermiculite and Kanuma soil, the coefficient, however, increased rapidly with drying the soils and reached 0.05cm2 s-1 one day after irrigation. The coefficient in sand was about three fifth of that in other two media after complete drying.
In sand containing small solid particles, CO2 concentration increased up to high level with a rapid decrease in gaseous diffusion coefficient by irrigation, and then decreased very slowly because of slow recovery of the coefficient.
