A 46-year-old housewife ate five raw carp gallbladders on October 28, 1988, and four hours later experienced vomiting, diarrhea and general fatigue. She was admitted to our hospital on November 1. Results of laboratory tests were: GOT 35IU/l, GPT 1, 109IU/l, BUN 89.4mg/dl, Cr 10.5mg/dl, UA 15.6mg/dl. Hemodialysis was performed nine times and renal function returned to normal in three weeks. Liver function also showed improvement. We performed a renal biopsy and the histological diagnosis was acute tubular necrosis.<br>Including our case, 17 cases of acute renal failure due to eating raw carp gallbladder have been reported in Japan.
