Abstract

Dietary salt intake is restricted to <6 g/day in patients receiving hemodialysis regardless of the patient's weight. Recently, it has been reported that low intradialytic body weight gain was a predictor of a poor prognosis in Japan and might be related to daily salt intake. We retrospectively investigated appropriate dietary salt intake by analyzing 249 pieces of data for 40 patients receiving hemodialysis. As a result, salt intake of 0.14 g/kg/day was found to be associated with 5% intradialytic body weight gain. This amount is close to the former Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy standard (0.15 g/kg/day) and should be considered to be a clinical standard in nutrition control for patients receiving hemodialysis.
