Description

The major salivary glands of an adult female tenrec (Tenrec ecaudatus) were examined histologically and histochemcally by light microscopy.
Histologically, the intralobular ducts or striated ducts of the parotid and submandibular glands were modified into granular ducts. In the sublingual gland, the intercalated and striated ducts hardly developed, namely, secretory units directly connect with the excretory duct.
Histochemically, all mucosubstances of the parotid gland were classified as of theplasma glycoprotein type. Acinar cell contained neutral mucopolysaccharides and mainly C7-O-acetyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid of sialic acids. The intercalated granular and granular duct cells contained only neutral mucopolysaccarides.
In the submandibular gland, mucosubstances of the acinar and granular duct cells were classified as of the plasma glycoprotein type, but those of the terminal tubule and intercalatedgranular cells were mucous glycoprotein type. The acinar cell contained neutral mucopolysaccharides and mainly more C8-O-acetyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid of sialic acids, but the terminal tubule, intercalated granular and granular duct cells contained only neutral mucopolysaccharides.
Based upon the histochemical sequence for classification of glycoprotein, two celltypes were distinguished in the terminal portion of the sublingual gland. Their cells were categorized as same mucous cell morphologically. Mucosubstances of the principal terminal cells were classified as of the mucous glycoprotein type, although those of the special cells plasma glycoprotein type. The later cells were sparsely present among former cells in the secretory units. The principal terminal cells contained little neutral mucopolysaccharides, C0-, C8-, C9-, and more C7-O-acetyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid of sialic acids. The special cells contained the same components as the principal terminal cells, but more neutral mocopolysaccharides and C8-O-acetylneuraminic acid were present.
