Description

Existence of Actinomyces products in inflamed human gingiva has been well known but the effects on periodontal tissue were yet to be clarified fully.<BR>In this study, the effects of tissue injuries in the periodontal tissue were investigated by using experimental animals (rats) which were inoculated with exudates of Actinomyces viscosus ATCC 19246 and Actinomyces naeslundii ATCC 12104. Pathological observation of the tissue revealed the presence of small necrotic changes in soft tissue and osteoclastic resorption in alveolar bone. This pathological observation suggested that these tissue injuries were directly brought about by the bacterial products. Accumulation of immunocytes consisted of non-helper T-cell, helper T-cell and B-cell, and formation of circulating antibody were also observed. These observations indicated that the exudates stimulate the tissue to produce various immune responses. However, Tissue injury by these immune responses, could not be established in this study.
