説明
The squamous suture between the temporal bone and the parietal bone of the human cranium was examined radiographically in 1, 170 cases (age: 10-89 years) and histologically in 17 cases (age: 50-87 years).
The squamous suture was characterized by four articular types in the frontal plane in anteroposterior radiographs: the contacted type (C type) in which the temporal and parietal bone surfaces were approximated, the separating type (S type) in which they were separated, the mixed type (M type) in which they were separated and displaced, and the overlapping type (O type) in which the articular surface of temporal bone overlapped the parietal bone. C and S types were the most commonly encountered. Three types, excluding C type, appeared mostly in older age groups.
Light microscopic observations of decalcified specimens of healthy squamous suture revealed that the connective fiber bundles and a loose matrix of highly vascularized connective tissue bridged the edges of the temporal and parietal bones. The connective tissue fibers extended into the bony structure. Mild signs of pathologic significance included a decreased number of cells with hyalinization and calcification of collagen bundles. Severe signs of pathologic significance included parallel orientation of collagen fibers to resorbed or appositonal bone surfaces, and occasional ankylotic changes.
These findings suggest that the squamous suture may play a significant role mechanically by allowing for both separation and sliding between the temporal bone and the parietal bone.
