Description
Objective and Study design: The cytological characteristics and variations of giant cell tumors of the bone (GCT), aspiration biopsy and cytology specimens, and/or imprint cytology specimens obtained from eleven cases of GCT were examined and compared.
Results: Cytologically, mononucleated cells, which are characteristic of GCT, and osteoclast-like multinucleated cells were observed. The mononucleated cells were often seen in clusters and were spindle-shaped or plump with fine oval-shaped nuclei containing evenly distributed chromatin and small nucleoli.
Conclusion: The characteristics of mononucleated tumor cells are important in the differential diagnosis of bone tumors containing osteoclast-like multinucleated cells. Very few cytological variations were observed among the cases. In some cases, secondary changes including necrosis, hemorrhage, and inflammatory cells, were present. These secondary findings should be taken into consideration when making a differential diagnosis.
