Two rare cases of ovarial carcinoid were examined histologically, cytologically and electron microscopically. Both patients had an abdominal mass without any symptom of carcinoid, mucinous cystoadenoma was found in one case and the other was intimately associated with struma ovarii, also called strumal carcinoid. Both tumors consisted of cords of polygonal cells with round to oval nuclei and a relatively abundant cytoplasm. Nuclear pleomorphism was not prominent. Grimelius stains showed positive reaction products in their cytoplasm. Electron microscopic examination disclosed membrane-bound electron dense granules of neurosecretory types ranging from 100nm to 200nm in diameter. Touch imprints at the time of surgery showed sheets of cells with uniformly sized round to oval nuclei and a faintly stained cytoplasm. These morphologic features were fairly consistent with those of carcinoids reported in other organs. The recognition of ovarial carcinoid is important for the differential diagnosis of ovarial neoplasms.
