Objective: To evaluate the problems associated with cytopathologic screening for uterine cervical cancer by public health examination, we studied the results of cytopathologic cervical screening in Sakai City.
Study Design: A total of 458, 005 women underwent cytopathologic cervical screening between 1972 and 2001. We retrospectively investigated the check-up forms, results of cytodiagnosis, and results of the follow-up survey.
Results: The annual change in the total number of examined women increased up to 1987, then noticably decreased until 2001. Moreover, it was also shown that the reduction in the total number of screenings was caused by a decrease in 40-and 50-year-old women. The annual change in classification of cytodiagnoses exhibited that class IIIa was noticably increased after 1996, and class IV was slightly increased in the recent 4 years. Further, the average detection rate of biopsies over class Ma was 65.7%.
Conclusion: For the early detection of cervical cancer, the total number of cervical screenings should be increased through an effective public education program, because the incentive to have a cancer examination will be affected by accurate information about cervical cancer.
