Abstract

Objectives : We studied ways to improve the cytodiagnostic determination in suspicious results from slightly dematored bile, and pancreatic duct brush specimens.
Study Design : Subjects were 40 cases—16 benign and 24 malignant—of 67 suspicious results from 248 bile and pancreatic duct brush specimens. We looked at significant differences among 13 items—(1)nucleus size, (2)cell size, (3)N/C ratio, (4)karyotype, (5)nucleoli, (6)cromatin, (7)mucin, (8)cluster size, (9)cluster shape, (10)cluster accumulation, (11)cluster side, (12)cluster combination, and (13)cell isolation.
Results : No significant differences were seen in the quantitative examination of items (1) to (3) and (8). Items (5), (9), and (10) in the qualitative examination showed the following benign crowd versus malignant results, i. e., 43.8% versus 20.8% for nucleoli, 37.5% versus 50.0% for cluster shape, and 37.5% versus 62.5% for cluster accumulation.
Conclusions : No decisive meaningful difference was seen in benign and malignant groups of suspicious results. But cluster shape and accumulation are more useful than other items.
