Objective : Schwannomas occur frequently among benign soft tissue tumors and demonstrate a variety of histological findings. An accurate understanding of the cytological features of the Schwannoma is therefore important. In this study, the cytological features of the Schwannoma were investigated comparing Antoni types A and B using imprint, squash and thin-layer specimens along with the macroscopic and histological features.<br>Study Design : Nine cases of Schwannomas arising in soft tissue were studied. Imprint, squash and thin-layer specimens were made from the fresh cut surface of resected tumors and subjected to Pap staining.<br>Results : In type A (2 cases), nuclear palisading and Verocay bodies were observed. In type B (7 cases), typical features were absent and secondary changes such as edematous/myxoid change, hemorrhage, hemosiderin deposit and macrophages were observed in 5 of the 7 cases.<br>Conclusion : Although cytological diagnosis is easy in cases with typical arrangement of the tumor cells, it is important to think of type B in cases with only the features associated with secondary changes. The combination of characteristic features from imprint, squash and thin-layer specimens can help to achieve accurate cytological diagnosis.
