Abstract

For years, some clinical cases of polyneuritis probably due to n-Hexane poisoning have been observed in some districts of Japan. But, there are no reports about the influences of n-Hexane on peripheral nerves. The author performed an experimental exposure test of n-Hexane using Wister strain albino rats. Five rats of the exposure group were fed in the 850 ppm n-Hexane chamber through 143 days and five rats of the control group were similarly fed in an ordinary chamber. The results obtained are as follws. Average body weights and blood findings such as hematocrit values or total serum protein concentraions and fractions of the exposure group were generally inferior, compared with the values of the control group. However, significant differences between these two groups were not recognized. Histological exminations of many organs revealed a slight reaction of the reticuloendothelial system in the spleens of the exposure group as only one abnormal finding. On microscopical examination of peripheral nerves, such reversible nerve injuries as degenerations of myelin and axis cylinders were observed in the sciatic nerves or in their branches of the exposure group. But these attacks could not affect nerve sheaths on myoneural junctions. Decreases of nocturnal movements were also recognized in the rats of the exposure group.
