Abstract

A new variety of red-flower buckwheat "HYRB" with higher yielding ability and logging resistance has been developed by mass selection from its population. It was developed by crossing between the dwarf line from "Shinano No.1" as seed parent and the line with red flower color from "Takane Ruby" as pollen parent. The main stem length is relatively shorter than that of "Shinano No.1", and the number of primary branches is more than "Shinano No.1". The seed yield per unit area is three times in comparison with that of "Takane Ruby" and achieves the similar level of "Shinano No.1" by the productivity testing at Minamiminowa village, Nagano pref. the logging resistance is higher than that of "Takane Ruby". The bloomed flower numbers per unit area and per a cluster are higher than "Takane Ruby" and "Shinano No.1". This variety was also evaluated as an ornamental plant with good landscape effect because it has the petals and fruit skin with pale red color pigments. In addition, it also has many blooming flowers per unit area.
