Description

We have introduced rye or oat ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) gene into rice. The transgenic rice plants with expression of the transgenes obtained disease resistance against rice blast and bacterial leaf blight. In this report, some characteristics of the transgenic plants were evaluated for their possible effects on their cultivation environment. According to the "Guidelines for recombinant DNA experiments" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the characteristics of the transgenic plants were evaluated for the following categories : expression to the transgenes, morphological and growth characters, reproductive characters, production of toxic substances, and residual Agrobacterium in plants. No significant differences were found among the transgenic plants and original non-transgenic plants, which indicate the effects on environment of the transgenic plants could be comparable to non-transgenic plants. After the report, we will make the further evaluation to prepare their cultivation in open fields according to the guidelines of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
