Abstract

One way to reduce the year imporove Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum is to use natural populations as selection materials. The natural population investigated showed a great diversity in the leaf shape as well as seedling populations did. From this natural population, I selected 116 plants with broad leaves (≧8.5cm) and 14 plants with narrow ones (<5.5cm).It should be noted that the leaf width was suitable for the index of high yielding. Using small leaf pieces obtained from some of the selected plants, ploidy level was also analyzed. The difference of the ploidy level was not found between broad leaf plants and narrow ones. Therefore, it is considered that the leaf shape (width and length) is controlled by different genetic mechanisms other than the ploidy level.
