Description
A total of 429 Large White boars were slaughtered at 90kg live weight to study the relationship of the size of male genital organ to body size, meat performance and heredity. The means were 195.3g for testis weight, 9.9cm for long diameter of testis, 6.4cm for short diameter of testis, 39.2g for epididymis weight, 132.6g for vesicula seminalis weight, 4.9g for prostate weight, 48.2g for glandulae bulbourethrales weight and 40.6cm for length of penis. The weight of these organs varied widely in individuals. Weight and long diameter of the left testis were greater than the right (P<0.01). These genital characteristics were positively correlated except for short diameter of testis and length of penis. They were negatively correlated with the average daily gain and were positively correlated with the chest girth. Estimated heritabilities for these eight characteristics from full-sib analysis were 0.46, 0.67, 0.48, 0.50, 0.40, 0.52, 0.71 and 0.45, respectively. Apart from above animals, 23 boars which showed monorchism condition had larger testes than normal boars (P<0.01), suggesting compensatory growth of testes.
