Abstract

Total ear-canal ablation in which the auricular annular cartilage (AuAC) was preserved was performed on three dogs with chronic otitis externa. A reverse L-shaped incision at a site below the tragus exposed the vertical ear canal. An ultrasonic scalpel was used to separate the vertical and horizontal ear canals from surrounding tissues. The vertical and horizontal canals were then removed from the opening of the osseous bulla. The medial walls of the remaining AuAC were sutured to the skin and the remaining lateral walls to the tragus. This technique appeared to prevent postoperative malformation of the pinna.
