Description

Dogs 1-year-old or younger, kept at an animal shelter were examined for helminth eggs adherent to the body surface around the mouth and anus and of the back, abdomen and legs, using the cellophane tape method. Various species of helminth eggs were detected from 14 of 47 dogs (29.8%), that is, canine round worms from 5 dogs (10.6%), canine whipworms from 8 (17.0%), canine tape worms from 6 (12.7%), Manson tape worms from 1 (2.1%), and mites from 4 (8.5%). In more than 80% of cases eggs were detected from perioral and perional regions and small number of eggs were detected from the fore and rear legs and abdominal region while no eggs from the dorsal region. From all 12 dogs and 3 of 4 cats infected with ascarids, the eggs were detected mostly from perioral and perional regions. After shampooing the infected animals wash water was shown to be positive for the eggs.
