Description
We have investigated in the present study the numbers of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and the frequency of development of thoracolumbar vertebrae of 13, 225 purebreds swine of Landrace, Large White, Humpshire, Duroc and Berkshire.
1. The number of the thoracic vertebrae amounted to 14-17. The number of 16 outnumbered in Landrace and Humpshire, followed by the number of 15, whereas these were in reverse order in Large White, Duroc, and Berkshire.
2. The numbers of lumbar vertebrae varied from 5 up to 7 in the majority of the swine, and the number of 6 outnumbered in any breeds.
3. The types of the thoracolumbar vertebrae could be classified into 19 through 24 types. The 22 type outnumbered in Landrace, Large White and Humpshire, followed by the 21 type, whereas this order was converse in Duroc and Berkshire.
4. The mean number of the thoracolumber vertebrae was the highest in Landrace, followed by Large White, Humpshire, Duroc and Berkshire in this decreasing order.
5. A low negative relationship was found out any breed between the numbers of thoracic vertebrae and those of the lumbar vertebrae.
6. A comparison of the mean number of the thoracolumbar vertebrae with that of 20 years ago revealed that this number of Landrace was comparable to or slightly less than that of 20 years ago, whereas those of Humpshire, Duroc and Berkshire clearly increased approaching that of Landrace and showing less differences among the different breeds.
7. The number of thoracolumber vertebrae of the line breeding swine tended to be larger in general than that of swine used for meat production performance test.
