Abstract
The end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (ETCO2) was evaluated for estimating the arterial partial pressure of CO, (PaCO2) in 88 dogs under inhalation anesthesia during spontaneous ventilation (SV) or intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). During IPPV ETCO2 was closeley correlated with PaCO2 (r=0.909, p<0.0001, n=45) and difference between the two was 3.8±2.2 mmHg. Also in SV cases with less than 40 breaths/min, ETCO2 was closeley correlated with PaCO2 (r=0.914, p<0.0001, n=100) showing a difference of 5.8±3.8 mmHg, while difference between the two values increased in cases with higher respiratory rates and lying in lateral recumbency. The results suggested that ETCO2 should be kept under 50 mmHg to prevent severe hypercapnia during inhalation anesthesia in dogs.
