Abstract

Thirteen weak and 31 normal Japanese Black calves were examined for hematological and blood-biochemical profiles and growth rate during 60 days after birth. The weak calves were significantly smaller in weight at birth and daily gain (P<0.01) than the normal calves, during neonatal period, the weak calves were anemic, showing higher levels of serum non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and urea-N as compared with the normal calves, suggesting increased mobilization of body fat and protein. Further, serum globulin levels of the weak calves were lower during the first 3 weeks after birth probably due to decreased or delayed intake of clostrum.
