Abstract

Two gentoo penguins (A, B) in a penguin aquarium showed symptoms of debilitation, anorexia, vomiting and hypochondria. Penguin A died in February 2007. Other penguins did not show any abnormalities. Three small pellets, two millimeters in diameter, were found in the abdominal cavity of A, andtwenty small pellets were found in B by X-ray examination. At necropsy of A, some slightly inflamed regions and two pellets were found in the stomach. Moreover, congestion and hemorrhaging were found in the intestinal mucous membrane of A. The lead level was 13.3±0.21ppm in the liver of A with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and the lead concentration in the serum of penguin B was 6.64 ppm. The pellets proved to be lead metal by X-ray qualitative analysis. The mean lead level was 0.007±0.003 ppm in the serums of the other four healthy penguins. The results suggested that the death and sickness were caused by lead poisoning.
