Abstract

A case of sperm granuloma in a 3-year-old male thoroughbred racehorse is described in this report. Both sides of the testis and the epididymidis of the horse were removed, since swelling in the left scrotum and chronic colic were evident. No bacterium was isolated from the pus in the left epididymis. A histopathological examination revealed a large number of irregular lesions, including degenerated or necrotic epididymal ducts and neutrophils, in the left epididymis. Many macrophages and epithelioid cells, which phagocytized significant quantities of sperm, were observed in the periphery of the necrotic lesions. Based on these findings, the lesions was diagnosed as sperm granuloma. The authors also speculated that azoospermia was caused by the degeneration and dropout of spermatogonia and spermatocytes due to secondary autoimmune reaction.
