Abstract

One-hundred-seventy-six isolates of Streptococcus suis were isolated from pigs brought to the Hamamatsu City Slaughterhouse. An examination of the isolates by multiplex PCR for capsule synthesis- and virulence-associated genes revealed the presence of the isolates, with gene profiles identical to those of the isolates from human patients during the largest outbreak in Sichuan, China, in 2005. Further molecular epidemiological analyses of the isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, 16S rRNA sequence, and multilocus sequence typing showed that some isolates analyzed in this study were genetically closely related to human clinical isolates isolated in and outside Japan. These results further emphasize the importance of control measures for S. suis infection for slaughterhouse workers.
