Description

In this paper 112 bivalved molluscs collected in intertidal to upper subtidal zones of the Truk Islands, Ponape Island and Majuro Atoll, the tropical Western Pacific, are reported with illustrations or brief descriptions. Faunal diversity of oceanic Caroline and Marshall Islands is smaller than those of continental islands. The fauna is characterized by large number of species of the Veneridae, Tellinidae, Arcidae, Cardiidae, Lucinidae and Mytillidae. The faunal composition is close to that of other Indo-Western Pacific waters, but far different from the Central Pacific Hawaiian fauna. Of 102 bivalve species identified 91% apparently extend their ranges to the Ryukyu Islands and 59% also to the Kii Peninsula, Japan. None of the collection are endemic to eastern Caroline and Marshall Islands.
