Abstract

Serpulids from Nauru, the Gilbert Islands (Republic of Kiribati) and the Solomon Islands, washed by the South Equatorial Current have been examined to elucidate the relationship between the serpulid fauna of Japan and that of the tropical Pacific. The present study deals with 24 taxa in nine genera, including two new species. They all occur in the Solomon Islands, and 18 species (75%) of them range to the Japanese waters. Nine species were collected from the Gilbert Islands, seven of them occur in Japanese waters as well. Judging from the results of this expedition the Japanese serpulid fauna has a high similarity to that of the Solomon Islands.
