Abstract
A cholesterol-based pellet of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRH-a), des Gly10- [D-Ala6] LHRH ethylamide, was applicated to induce maturation and spawning in red sea bream. Pagrus major, during non-spawning season. November to December. In vitro release of the hormone from the pellet containing 50μg LHRH-a resulted in a peak at 28th day of 1.04μg /day, decreased rapidly at 35th day to 0.58μg/day, and after 49th day showed a relatively constant rate (0.2-0.35μg/day) for about two months. Single implantation of the pellet containing 100μg LHRH-a induced spawning in completely immature fish 17 days after the implantation, about six months prior to the natural spawning season. Fish implanted with 50μg LHRH-a cholesterol pellet showed gonadal development in both sexes. Histopathological findings of muscular tissues surrounding the implant showed no imflammatory response to a foreign body, suggesting a good biocompatibility of the pellet. These results suggest that LHRH-a cholesterol pellet used in this study is useful for a long-term hormone therapy to induce sexual maturation in fish which is required for a series of hormone injections.
