説明

Comparison of mucilage canals was made on Laminaria japonica, L. ochotensis, L, angustata from Hokkaido and L. japonica cultivated in western part of Tokyo Bay.
In L, japonica from Hokkaido, mucilage canals were arranged in single layer in outer cortex, sometimes in two layers near fascia; the diameter was about 200-100μm in inner layer and 100-50μm in outer layer.
The distribution pattern and diameter of mucilage canals of L. ochotensis and L. japonica are almost the same except it was distributed in single layer in all parts of the frond of L. ochotensis.
Mucilage canals of L. angustata were arranged in single layer in all parts of the frond, its diameter was about 10 fpm in fascia and 5μm near the marginal part.
In L. japonica cultivated in Tokyo Bay, mucilage canals were arranged in single layer in the frond except basal part. Mucilage canals were rarely arranged in two layers around the center of basal part of the frond. The diameter of mucilage canals was about 10μm. Generally, their size and distribution pattern resembled to those of L. angustata.
Based on our observation, it seems that while fully developed mucilage canals are good for making broth, poorly developed mucilage canals can be used for direct eating.
