A 45-day feeding trial was conducted in a running seawater system to evaluate the potential of soy protein concentrate (SPC) as a substitute for fish meal (FM) in the diet for spotted halibut Verasper variegatus (initial average weight of 36.0 g) . A control diet containing no SPC and high content of FM and six different diets containing 16, 32 and 48% of SPC with and without supplemental amino acids (lysine and methionine) were fed to 20 fish (per 200-l tank) in duplicate. Fish fed the diets containing 16 and 32% of SPC showed comparable growth and feed conversion to those fed the control diet, while feeding with the 48% SPC diet resulted in notable reduction in growth and feed conversion. On the other hand, the performance of fish fed a diet supplemented with amino acids was almost the same as that of fish fed a diet without supplementation at each SPC level. Furthermore, there was little difference in the hematological characteristics among the groups, although the serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, body lipid and energy retention levels decreased at dietary SPC levels of more than 16 and 32%, respectively. These results indicate that the inclusion of 16 to 32% SPC (20 to 40% substitution for FM) as a substitute for FM in the diet for spotted halibut is appropriate, with or without amino acid supplementation.
