説明

Ecology of the Ecklonia kurome vegetation was investigated by monthly samplings during the period from July 1986 to January 1989 in waters off Kashima, Shimane Prefecture. The central lamina grew mostly in spring, and the primary pinnae developed mostly in winter, while growth of the stipe did not show a clear seasonal trend. The rhizoid developed in tiers once a year, mostly in January. It was considered that the number of rhizoid tiers is applicable to the age determination of this species. The life span of this species was estimated to be six years from the present observation. No distinct growth ring was recognized in the stipe cross section. The mass drift ashore of mature plants was observed in autumn, which was discussed in relation to the recruitment of vegetation.
