Abstract

Temperature requirements of the French oyster Ostrea edulis were studied under natural and laboratory conditions using the laboratory maintained strain at the Oyster Research Institute (Mohne lab. Karakuwa Miyagi Japan) . The rearing experiment started in September in 1986 and 1987. Oysters were first reared at the raft and then half of the oysters were transferred into the rearing tank where the rearing temperature was maintained at 18°C from April 4, 1987 and April 10, 1988. The first swarming was observed from the oysters kept in the ambient temperature in July 7, 1987 and July 3, 1988, respectively. On the other hand, the first swarming of the laboratory conditioned oyster occurred on May 21, 1987 and May 16, 1988. The correlation coefficients between the average rearing temperature and the required period in days for swarming were calculated at each conditions. This calculation was repeated shifting every 10 days interval from September 1. High correlation was obtained when calculation started between September 1 and November 1. The relation between the rearing temperature (T) and the required time in day until first swarming (d) was obtained from the case started from November 1, which gives the shortest conditioning period. It is shown as following equation:
1/d=-0.006699+0.001039 T, (r=0.9980) .
The biological zero temperature for gonad development until larval swarming is 6.5°C from the equation. The onset of the swarming is predictable based on the following formula:
D=nΣi=1 (ti-6.5) > 972.
where D = cumulative temperature in degree-day, n = number of days required to initiate swarming, ti= temperature to which the oysters were exposed daily (°C) .
