This study was conducted to predict spawning and control it in the mud crab, Scylla paramamosain. Pre-mated females were obtained from Urado Bay, Kochi Pref., and reared in tanks at 16-17°C during the overwintering period. Ovarian egg diameter (OED) and the gonad-somatic index (GSI) were examined using 30 females; data sets of OED by biopsy and the cumulative water temperature (CWT) to spawning were determined for 35 females. The relationship between OED and GSI is expressed as: GSI=0.0005OED1.7647 (n=30, R2=0.9148, P<0.001) . Therefore, it is considered that OED represents the degree of ovarian development because GSI increased with increase in OED. The CWT decreased exponentially with increasing OED: the relationship between OED and CWT is expressed as: CWT=7.8×1023OED-8.3872 (n=35, R2=0.5665, P<0.001) . These indicate that timing of spawning can be estimated by measuring ovarian egg diameter of the mud crab, Scylla paramamosain. However, CWT tended to fluctuate largely under 360μm of OED.
