Description

A new method of concentrating unicellular diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis and Ch. calcitrans, using an ultra-filtration hollow fiber membrane module was developed and its capacity was evaluated from the collection percentage in this technical study. Moreover, the decrease of growth activity of cells, which were collected by the system and preserved in a dark and cool (4-5°C) condition, was measured after various periods preservation time by batch style culture. From the results of these experiments, the concentration rate was estimated as 20-30 times for about 30 minutes, and the density of the concentrated Ch. gracilis and Ch. calcitrans was 13×107cells/ml and 16-18×107 cells/ml, respectively. Chaetoceros gracilis and Ch. calcitrans kept their growth activities for 30 days and 25 days of storage, respectively. Therefore, the method is useful for collecting unicellular algae, and these concentrated algae can be used as not only as food organisms but also seed for algal large-scale cultures.
