In Chichijima, one of the Ogasawara Islands, growth of reared blacktip grouper Epinephelus fasciatus was examined for two years after hatching. During the rearing period from November 1991 to September 1993 mean monthly water temperatures were in the range of 20.6-28.8°C (mean 24.0°C) . At the age of one year, the average total length and body weight were 16.6±2.0 cm and 90.7±32.8 g respectively, whereas those at two years were 23.7±2.7 cm and 261.0±89.75g. The growth curve described by the von Bertalanffy equation was as follows: Lt=32.965 * [1-EXP {-0.567* (t+0.207) } ] where Lt is the total length (cm) of fish at age t (years after hatching) . The relationship between total length and body weight was described by the equation W=0.0089L3.238 where L is the total length (cm) and W is the body weight (g) . The daily feeding rate was at least 8% of the body weight day until 225 days after hatching, 2-5% between 226 and 505 days, and about 2% thereafter. The daily growth rate decreased with increasing body size, became less than 1% of the body weight/day at 92 days after hatching. Average food conversion efficiency was 15.0% during the first year and 13.2% in the second year.
