In order to assess biological differences between Japanese and Korean red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara, their morphological and genetic features were examined. Significant morphological differences between the two forms included differing snout length and orbital diameter proportions and anal fin ray counts. Allelic frequencies showed significant differences by chi-square tests between the two forms at the AAT-2, EST, LAP and MEP loci. The genetic distance (D value) between the two forms was 0.0052, a figure at least significant at the interpopulation level, indicating that the release of the Korean form into Japanese waters, already inhabited by a distinctly different Japanese population, should be of some concern.
