Abstract

The clock time when Cryptocaryon irritans leaves host as protomonts and invades host as theronts was investigated using red sea bream Pagrus major and parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus, respectively, as host fishes in a tank or a floating net pen. The time of leaving was examined by hanging sediment traps in a tank and a floating net pen, in both of which cryptocaryoniasis was occurring. To investigate the time of invasion, parrot fish were challenged in a hanging net cage in the tank for limited periods and mortality of the challenged fish by cryptocaryoniasis was examined. The leaving and invasion mainly occurred in the middle of the night. Though the time was slightly different from those obtained previously in laboratory experiments, C. irritans was found to leave and invade hosts in a limited period of a day.
